Urban areas across Africa face increasing risks from a variety of hazards, including natural hazards, climate change impacts, public health crises, and vulnerabilities stemming from inadequate inclusion of marginalized groups, such as persons with disabilities. These risks are compounded by rapid urbanization, which often outpaces the development of resilient infrastructure and effective governance mechanisms.
The Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities and its addendums on climate, public health, and disability inclusion provide a structured approach for cities to assess their level of progress towards achieving resilience, identify gaps in their disaster risk management strategies, and design inclusive solutions. This session will enable cities to share experiences and learn from each other about how to effectively use the scorecard to build urban resilience, particularly by incorporating these critical dimensions into their planning and governance processes
This session, co-facilitated by UNDRR and GIZ, will provide participants with hands-on experience in applying the scorecard and its addendums. City representatives who have already implemented the tool will share their experiences, challenges, and successes. The session aims to foster knowledge exchange, encourage peer learning, and inspire cities to take concrete steps toward enhanced disaster resilience.
