Parliamentary Forum on Disaster Risk Reduction

As Africa continues to grapple with the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change, environmental degradation and increasing disaster risk, the imperative for effective disaster risk reduction has never been more pronounced. The AfRP-9 presents a crucial opportunity for Member States to renew their commitments to the Sendai Framework and the Programme of Action for its implementation in Africa, ensuring alignment with broader global and continental agendas, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the African Union's Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.

Within this context, the role of parliaments across Africa becomes increasingly critical. Parliaments hold a unique and powerful mandate to drive forward disaster risk reduction initiatives. Parliamentary action is essential not only for crafting and enforcing legislation, ensuring the appropriation of adequate budgets but also for ensuring that disaster risk management strategies are effectively integrated into national development plans, with a particular focus on enhancing the resilience of the most vulnerable members of society.

The Parliamentary Forum is co-convened with the SADC Parliamentarian Forum and Globe Legislators to provide a dedicated space for parliamentarians to engage with the aim to enhance parliamentary understanding of the Sendai Framework and their role in managing disaster risk.
